In addition of our international mission, the members of the Belgian Section of the International College of Surgeons (B.S.I.C.S.), have also a special task in our country. We have to create a surgical society where all surgeons, as well from the south, the north and the east of our country, speaking different languages, could meet. We will try to receive in our College surgeons from academic centres, good regional hospitals, as delegates from our different scientific and professional societies.
We will give a special attention to our young residents. We will take care of the quality of their training. We will not forget that also a young trainee has the right to have a familiar life.

Historical Notice
Dr. Max Thorek (American, 1880-1960) was born in Hungary, became a surgeon of eminence, was a superb organizer and a friend of the poor.
He founded the forerunner of Thorek Hospital and Medical Center on the west side of Chicago in 1911. In 1917, the hospital, then known as the American Theatrical Hospital, was moved to its present location.
He founded the International College of Surgeons at Geneva (Switzerland) in 1935, with the goals of promoting the exchange of surgical knowledge and fostering understanding and good will worldwide.
At one point he turned up as personal physician to the 'Mom' who had a gynecological (or was it neurological ?) condition that was sufficiently perplexing to receive his attention, and the 'Babe' passed momentarily through his shadow.
He was a member of the Royal Photographer Society of Great Britain and the Chicago Camera Club.
'Initiative', c.1929; vintage gelatin silverprint, 13" x 10", signed and titled in pencil.
