The International College of Surgeons (I.C.S.) is a world federation of general surgeons and surgical specialists. It's a global organization dedicated to bringing together surgeons and surgical specialists of all nations, races and creeds to promote surgical excellence for the benefit of all of mankind and to foster fellowship worldwide.
The I.C.S. was founded in Geneva (Switzerland) in 1935 by Dr. Max Thorek, with the goals of promoting the exchange of surgical knowledge and fostering understanding and good will worldwide. The I.C.S. now has over 70 organized national Sections around the world with more than 8000 members in over 110 countries.
Since the beginning, the ICS has been offering quality programs toward this end, such as the following:
Worldwide conferences
The International Surgery journal
The International Museum of Surgical Science, Chicago, USA
Surgical Teams, which visit other countries upon request
Scholarships for surgeon specialty training
Collaborative projects with global health care related organizations
Surgical research.
In addition of our international mission, the members of the Belgian Section of the International College of Surgeons (B.S.I.C.S.), have also a special task in our country. We have to create a surgical society where all surgeons, as well from the south, the north and the east of our country, speaking different languages, could meet. We will try to receive in our College surgeons from academic centres, good regional hospitals, as delegates from our different scientific and professional societies.
We will give a special attention to our young residents. We will take care of the quality of their training. We will not forget that also a young trainee has the right to have a familiar life.
